In December 2013, the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) awarded a contract to a consortium formed between Itochu, Kinki Sharyo and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (IKK) to supply rolling stock for the Shatin-Central Link, Phase 1.

he scope of the IKK contract (C1151) was to supply a fleet of 8-car trains, by converting MTRC existing rolling stock from KCRC West Rail (7 car), Ma-On-Shan Line (4 car) and East Rail (12 car) trains, for operation on Shatin-Central Line (SCL) Phase 1, “East-West Corridor” (EWC).

In addition to complex conversion tasks, involving more than 30 different types of train cars, some new information and monitoring systems are being supplied in the 8-car trains.

In January 2014, CCT in partnership with E-Consult, was Appointed by Kinki Sharyo (on behalf of IKK) to provide systems assurance (RAMS), software assurance, requirements and risk management support to IKK. CCT had been appointed consultant to IKK for the original KCRC rolling stock contract from 1999 to 2003).

IKK completed the first conversions to 8-car trains in 2015 and delivered them to MTRC, initially for operation on Ma On Shan line.

In June 2020, the majority of converted trains have been delivered and some are already operating on Phase 1,Tuen Ma Line, from WuKai Sha to Kai Tak, which opened to (partial) passenger service in January 2020.
